I am sorry to hear this but not completely surprised. Drumming repetition can wreak havoc on a body especially over years of constant performing, recording and practicing. I can only imagine the aggravation it gives and thankful that I have only had minor numbness in one hand over the years when playing. Mr. Peart is also about 20 years my senior and a seasoned professional with much more time behind the skins by my age.
I also remember Mike Portnoy discussing in one of his videos about the pain he had after drumming a long show with Dream theater. I believe he suffers from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome as well and the work he does is very fast, intricate and physical. He was in a lot of pain after the show if I recall. Rigors of the job I suppose.

It brought me to remember the line from Star Trek Generations that stuck with me from Dr. Soran (Malcolm McDowell) about age and life:
They say time is the fire in which we burn. Right now, Captain, my time is running out. We leave so many things unfinished in our lives.
I actually found thorough research that this line was originally quoted by Mr. Gene Roddenberry himself… interesting.
Time is a true constant and something we cannot delay or reverse and must accept. We have to progress the best we can in this life and adapt to the challenges that lie ahead. I put my faith in God and his wisdom to comfort and guide me through this time on earth and to provide me with the best health possible to keep doing the things that I love to do.
