MXL Drum Cube Richard Geer's New Tom MicsI am excited to have ordered my mic replacements for my toms. I currently use the SHURE PG56 microphone for my toms and I have 4 split across 6 toms. Not a great balance for me. The upgrade will increase the tom count to 6 giving me the full coverage and recording control that I want for my system and drum kit.

After using MXL mics for my snare, cymbals and overheads I have decided to keep the tom mics in the family buy purchasing the MXL Drum Cube. I have made this decision after using current MXL mics and listening to a few samples on the web. They are affordable and will be an nice improvement to my recording system.

Gavin Harrison runs a great set of mics including the AKG C414 XLII on his toms but I don’t have a grand each at the moment to drop on mics of that caliber. I always love the sound he gets with the Sonor kit out of his home studio. I am sure a lot is done to the tracks before final pressing but I like to deliver my drum tracks like Gavin as clean as possible and close to the original sound of the equipment. I apply minimal EQ and compression and give the engineer more control over the mix and if they want to squish a channel or EQ to taste.

Thank you Clark Kirkwood from Clark’s Music Center for facilitating my purchase.Ā  I look forward to giving them a run through as soon as they arrive.

More to follow..... Keep On Drumming!!!
